Infernal Equinox

Filed under: General — stargazer @ 12:18 pm

Happy first day of fall! If you live anywhere near me, you know it is 90 degrees and not anything like fall. This has been the hottest summer I can ever remember having. We did have one day of fall last week, but other than that, it’s been hot hot hot. The leaves will be hanging on for a long time. Trees are not even losing their leaves yet. An atypical year again. Last year was the coldest summer I think we’ve ever had. Weird.

A naked man holding a baby

Filed under: General — stargazer @ 5:07 pm

I learned something interesting today at lab meeting. I work in a lab where we study brain activation using functional MRIs. A student in the lab presented some old research from another lab where brain activation was studied by showing participants a variety of pictures. The pictures ranged from boring to scary to erotic. The erotic stimuli always generated the highest signal across all brain regions of interest. The student also said that in order for females to show the same degree of brain activation and arousal as males for erotic pictures, the picture had to be of a naked man holding a baby. How funny is that?! I can’t say that I’ve ever seen a naked man holding a baby so I don’t know.

Going Pro

Filed under: General — stargazer @ 3:33 pm

I’m a dancer, and sometimes I get paid to dance.

Now, I know what you’re probably thinking. It’s not THAT kind of dance! I’m involved in a latin american dance group and sometimes when we perform we get a small stipend. I’ve danced at a community center, a library, a theater, and soon a church. It’s pretty much fun, but I guess it doesn’t put me in the big leagues. Also, though I’ve been paid on a number of occasions to play music… weddings, church things, coffeehouses… it doesn’t make me a professional musician. At least I don’t think of myself that way. I’m just a girl with a little voice and a guitar. And maybe someday I’ll go pro.

Michael Jordan’s Locker

Filed under: General — stargazer @ 1:40 pm

I don’t know why my dad went looking in Michael Jordan’s locker at the fancy golf club in Chicago, but he did. Well, somebody told him it was Michael Jordan’s locker, anyway. It was the obvious choice, number 23. He said MJ had like 8-10 pairs of shoes in there. Were they Air Jordans? I asked. No, they were all golf shoes. Then, he said he swung Michael Jordan’s fat-handled driver right there in the locker room. He put everything back like it was. Country clubs ought to allow locks on lock-ers.

I smell natural gas

Filed under: General — stargazer @ 9:15 am

I have a keen nose. I noticed that every time I rode my bike or even drove down the end of my street I could smell gas. After noticing this a number of times, I thought it would be a good idea to report it because it was obviously there and obviously persistent.

The next day I saw a huge hole in the street. The day after that the gas smell was gone for good.

Report the smell of natural gas.

I’ve heard rumors that your gas bill this winter could be 70% greater than it was last winter. I even feel bad for some of those rich people with enormous old houses and their soon to be $10,000 gas bills. Sucks!

Wake me up when September ends

“Summer has come and past
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends”
-Green Day

It’s been hard to answer people these past few days when they say “how are you?” I think I had a previous entry about how there is a right answer to that question, but it’s hard to say ‘I’m fine’ when I’m really so disheartened about the damage of Hurrican Katrina. I have felt in the past few days that I am watching the events of my real life almost from outside, because I am not as concerned with the small stuff now. I’m just more afraid of the next terror. We’ll be due again in about four Septembers. I guess I just have to keep going on with my life, but that doesn’t mean I’m not troubled by everything that is happening. At least I know now that KFFH is ok, but so many others are not. I have spent hours watching the news, and everyday it is worse than the day before. And I am sad.

“Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again…
Wake me up when September ends”

America, my prayers are with you.
