How to boil an egg and other stupid questions

Filed under: General — stargazer @ 6:57 pm

I don’t like it when people ask stupid questions like, “how are you?” I get that one all the time. There is only one right answer to that question, and it’s usually a lie. A better answer would be “I’m the same as I was the last time you asked me that question.”

So I too have a stupid question… how do you boil an egg? Every time I try, it doesn’t turn out right. I’ve made several eggs explode. It’s a mess. Most of the time the yoke is all bright yellow and disgusting and it has to be thrown away. I obviously need another lesson in how to boil an egg. Any hints, anyone?

  1. well, i’ve always just filled a pan/pot with enough water to cover the egg. start with the egg in the pan/pot and turn it on medium or medium high. let it come to a boil and boil for 10 to 15 minutes. the shells peel easier, in my experience, if you don’t let the eggs get too cold before peeling.

it’s been a while since i boiled an egg, but i’ve never had many problems. do you know the actual difference between a pan and a pot. i’m pretty sure it’s that a pan has one handle and a pot has two. well, that’s my random thought for the day. good luck!

  2. Also, you should keep the water at a rolling boil. Don’t have a hard-core boil going. I agree with Linda though. It’s all about keeping them under water for long enough.

I always thought a pan was just slightly taller than a skillet, whereas a pot was high enough for soups, sauces, and other liquids.

  4. Hi-
Long time listener, first time caller… Umm…The egg thing…start with egg in the water before yu turn on the heat…boil on high….3 minutes… then..rinse out hot water and add into the same pan cool water until pot is cooled off…then into the fridge for 30 min or more…(Sometimes overnight) the egg yoke is probably runny because it hadn’t cooled long enough..(Mom’s taught me to cook)

Also– I agree with the How are you question thingy….everyone lies and then when someone actually tells the truth…you are shocked or don’t really care anyway…
